The town of Calce is located in the northernmost Catalan part of the Roussillon region, dominated by the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea. The wine-growing region around the town enjoys the highest quality reputation. Winemaker Thomas Teibert, who comes from Germany, has been managing his small winery Domaine de l'Horizon since 2005. He relies on regional varieties such as Carignan, Grenache, Syrah for the reds and Macabeu, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc and Muscat Petits Grains for the whites and, above all, on biodynamic vineyard management. The majority of the vines are old, in some cases very old at over 100 years and produce a very modest yield of 15 — 20 hl/ha, but of even better quality. Under the name L'Esprit de l'Horizon, Thomas Teibert offers a white and a red wine whose grapes come from “younger” vines, they are 20 — 60 years old and show a somewhat more fruitful, more accessible style. The white wine is a blend of 80% Macabeu with Muscat's Petits Grains. The wine is aged on yeast for 8 months in steel and cement tanks and in vats. With its spicy and fresh character, it goes well with seafood and fish.
