About the wine
The winemaker from the Portuguese winery Christie Wines is absolutely proficient in his craft. Elegance and finesse are the characteristics of this red wine, which originates in the lush and graceful landscape of the Douro Valley. With the dominant Touriga Franca 2013 — Dona Mafalda DOC Douro, nuances and accents are redefined. Flaschenpöstler culinary tip: This Touriga Franca is very good to serve with grilled vegetables or pasta.
Tasting note
This dark ruby red Douro wine delights with powerful aromas of black cherries, blackberries, ripe plums paired with spicy aromas of chocolate, stomach bread and some pepper. On the palate, it is extremely fruity and full-bodied with a pleasantly refreshing acidity and elegant tannins. A classic Douro wine with lots of power and yet elegant style.
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with grilled dishes, dark meats, burgers, pasta dishes and Portuguese specialties.
Vinification
The grapes for Dona Mafalda come from ancient vines around the old and now newly renovated Quinta Dona Mafalda. The grape varieties in the vineyard grow in a colorful mix and are all picked by hand. The four main varieties are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Sousao. After manual harvesting, the grapes are fermented spontaneously in stainless steel tanks. 1/3 of the wine is aged in French barriques for 6 months, the rest matures in steel tanks. After blending, the wine is bottled and aged in the bottle for at least another year before it is on the market. Only 7,500 bottles of the first 2013 vintage were produced.
