Descalificado Ribera del Duero DO 2017 - Bodega Requiem Hispania

About the wine

This present Tempranillo 2016 — Descalificado Ribera del Duero DO crowns every festive meal with elegance and finesse. The magnificent and enchanting landscapes of the Duero Valley (Castilla y Leon) give us these grapes, from which the winemaker from the Spanish winery Bodega Requiem Hispania conjures up this red wine with refinement and experience. Flaschenpöstler tip: Combine this Tempranillo with polenta or pizza.

Tasting note
This strong ruby red wine is pleasing on the nose with aromas of black berries, plum, cranberry, pipe tobacco, some precious wood and slightly herbal notes. On the palate, it is strong, with lots of red berry fruit, notes of leather, some tar and accents of sweet spices. The tannins are velvety and ripe and the acidity is rather subtle. An exciting Tempranillo with a wild yet balanced character and a long-lasting, fruit-borne finish.
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with Spanish specialities, hearty meat dishes, grills, game and lamb.
Vinification
Descalificado Due to an act of rebellion to defend authenticity In normal years, the base wine of Requiem is called Re Minor. With the 2016 vintage, however, the wine was excluded from DOCa by the Ribera del Duero regulatory authority because it did not meet the requirements. In order to market this wine in the Ribera del Duero appellation, artificial acid would have had to be added to the Re Minor in 2016 to make it compliant with the rules. According to Requiem, this is complete nonsense, as it leads to standardized wines that do not really match the typical vintage. That is why the winery has decided to downgrade the wine and simply market it as red wine. By the way, the regulatory authority has now changed the parameters so that the wine no longer has to be disqualified today. The grapes for the Descalificado come from an average 70-year-old bush vine in the Ribera del Duero. After handpicking, the grapes are spontaneously fermented with natural yeasts without adding sulfur. The wine is aged for 16 months in new and used French barriques.
