About the wine
The winemaker from the Italian winery La Gerla is absolutely proficient in his craft. Style and finesse are the characteristics of this red wine, which originated in the fertile and flourishing Tuscan countryside. This outstanding Sangiovese 2012 — Birba crowns every festive meal with elegance and finesse. Flaschenpöstler tip: Pair this Sangiovese with pasta or beef.
Tasting note
The Birba is affectionately called “Brunellino”. In contrast to Brunello, which matures for at least two years in the large “Botte”, it is aged in barriques for around 12 months. It delights with its strong structure, fine tannins and a complex range of aromas: rose, dried plum, cherry, spices and herbs as well as notes of chocolate, licorice and tar. The Birba can easily be stored up to 10 years after harvest and is a wonderful treat even without food.
Culinary recommendation
Recommended by Flaschenpöstlern: Goes well with pizza, lamb and pasta. Our recommendation: The ideal drinking temperature for the red wine is a slightly chilled 16°-18°C.
Vinification
The vinification took place as follows: Strict selection of the grapes, hand picking, gentle pressing, temperature control during the fermentation process, 2 withdrawals per year, bottling by gravity without pumps. The ageing takes place in barriques for 13 months and then in bottle for 12 months.
