Pesus DO 2016 - Vina Sastre

About the wine

The winemaker from the Spanish winery Vina Sastre has absolutely mastered his craft. Elegance and refinement are the characteristics of this red wine, which originates in the magnificent and beautiful landscape of the Duero Valley (Castilla y Leon). You will certainly enjoy the fine Pesus DO, which was produced in 2011.

Tasting note
Pesus is regularly honored as one of Spain's best wines. The 2006 vintage received 98 points from Parker, 100 points from the Wine Enthusiast, 99 points from Guia Proensa and was voted one of the 2 best wines in Spain by the newspaper El Mundo in a blind test. The almost black colored Pesus has an explosive bouquet with aromas of cassis, cherry liqueur, spices, vanilla, smoked meat and so on. An incredibly concentrated, palate-filling, almost port-like wine, but thanks to its minerality and elegance, it never seems overripe. Unfortunately, the pesus is so rare that you can count yourself lucky if you can only get hold of one or the other bottle.
Culinary recommendation
A wine for special moments.
Vinification
The grapes for Pesus come from 80-100-year-old vines from 3 different plots. Two of them have clayey limestone soil and one plot has gravel soil. Only the best quality grapes are picked by hand, which results in an extremely low yield. After spontaneous fermentation, the wine is aged in new French barriques for 24 months. It is moved twice into new French barriques. So actually 300% new wood! It is then bottled unfiltered and unembellished and is stored in the bottle for a further period of time. Only 1500-1800 bottles of this elixir are produced per vintage.
