The town of Calce is located in the northernmost Catalan part of the Roussillon region, characterized by the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea. The wine-growing region around the town enjoys the highest quality reputation. Winemaker Thomas Teibert, who comes from Germany, has been managing his small winery Domaine de l'Horizon since 2005. He relies on regional varieties such as Carignan, Grenache, Syrah for the red and Macabeu, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc and Muscat petits grains for the white and, above all, biodynamic cultivation of the vineyards. The majority of the vines are old, sometimes very old at over 100 years old and deliver a very modest yield of 15 — 20hl/ha, but all the better quality.Under the name L'Esprit de l'Horizon, Thomas Teibert offers a white and a red wine, whose grapes come from “younger” vines, they are 20 — 60 years old and show a slightly more fruity, more accessible style. The red wine is a blend of 2/3 Carignon with Syrah. After minimal extraction, the wine matures for 12 months in tonneaux of 500 liters to a wine with peppery spiciness and a smooth structure.
