Tasting note
Dark, rich fruit and an intense floral scent pop out of the glass. Complex aromas of violets and white flowers are combined with concentrated blueberries, vanilla and dark chocolate. The wine has a strong, full palate that is as rich as the nose promises - intense blackberry and blueberry, overlaid with dark chocolate, tobacco leaves and toast. Partial whole grape fermentation gives it a piquant spiciness and lively acidity, which balances out the robust tannins and gives the wine strength and structure. Strong blueberries and roasted aromas on the finish promise good ageing potential for this wine.
Culinary recommendation
Fantastic wine for a Christmas feast, such as roast goose or venison leg from the oven.
Vinification
The Single Vineyard Syrah was designed by Jean Engelbrecht as his generational contribution to the family heritage. A pure expression of only the best Syrah that Rust en Vrede has to offer. The grapes are harvested by hand from the oldest and best Syrah block on the estate and are partially destemmed, with 25% of the grapes fermented as whole bundles. Fermentation takes place in open containers with regular manual punching and pumping. The maceration takes 14 to 21 days. Plots and clones are vinified separately. The wine is aged for 16 months in 500-liter French oak barrels, 20% of which are new wood.
