About the wine

The family winery in southern Sicily was only founded in the 90s in the municipality of Sambuca di Sicilia on Lake Arancio in the province of Agrigento. The owners are cousins Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, who, with the help of internationally renowned oenologist Carlo Corino (2007), turned the old winery into a top Italian business with the latest cellar technology within a few years. On over 360 hectares of vineyards in six different wine-growing zones in Sicily, autochthonous and international grape varieties are grown, with particular attention being paid to cultivating the right grape variety on the right soil. Their motto is to give a modern interpretation of historical traditions and grape varieties. Environmental compatibility is very important to them, and also when producing their excellent olive oil. For Robert Parker, Planeta is considered the reference asset par excellence in this region. Planeta is the high-starter in Sicily. In the wine guide “Gambero Rosso Vini dItalia 1999", the winery was voted number one of the year. The vines of this Syrah grow at an altitude of 400 m in the vineyards of Maroccoli. The climate, which ideally meets the needs of Mediterranean grapes, is bright, dry and warm, creating a modern interpretation of the characterful Syrah.
